La Mata is a small town located about 5 kilometres from Torrevieja city centre that is often referred to as an outer lying suburb. As you enter the outskirts of La Mata you are greeted by Torre del Moro Park which has an attractive watchtower in its centre and shady trees and green areas offering fantastic sea views, in-fact much of La Mata has sea views due to its surrounding hills and welcome lack of high rise buildings. The area is quite affluent and this is reflected in its property prices, although with a bit of exploring there are still bargains to be found in this lovely part of the Costa Blanca. The beachfront area is home to some luxury apartments and stunning villas with the odd hotel such as the popular Masa Hotel that perches high on a cliff top with wonderful panoramic views. The rocky coves in front of the hotel are a favourite haunt for fishermen.
Further back from the beach the houses rise in a series of terraces in different styles including quaint bungalows, modern townhouses and lovely detached villas with private swimming pools. The road into the town is lined with bars and restaurants where many British and northern European accents can be heard. The town itself is a bit of a let down with not much to offer along its main street, Calle Mayor other than a few sleepy tapas bars and a supermarket that closes at 2pm for siesta time !! La Mata is all about its lovely properties, views and the wonderful long stretch of golden sand beach. This is where the main action is and there is a wooden boardwalk running along the beach, lined with bars and restaurants so swimmers and sunbathers don’t need to venture far in search of refreshment.
